THE HUMAN SEXUAL RESPONSE – PHISICAL REACTIONS 2

Second, by its thrusting within the vagina, and by its indirect stimulation of the woman’s clitoris through the movement of her labia minora, the penis provides the woman with sexual stimulation. If the man is a considerate lover, he will not neglect this aspect of the function of his penis in his desire to reach orgasm. This demands that he detaches himself to some extent from his own pleasure, in order to give pleasure to his partner, at a time when he can voluntarily prevent orgasm.

There is a false belief that the peak of sexuality is only achieved if both male and female reach orgasm simultaneously. When this does occur both partners can be happy that they have achieved a joyous sexual experience, but simultaneous orgasm is not necessary for sexual joy. Provided the man is prepared to help his partner to orgasm, should she desire it, either by gently stroking the shaft, or head, of her clitoris, or by stimulating her clitoris with his tongue, depending on her wishes, either before or after his orgasm, their sexual compatibility and enjoyment are as great as if they have an orgasm simultaneously. In fact, the anxiety engendered by both partners struggling to reach orgasm against a mental clock can mar their relationship. The man who believes that his sexual potency is less than normal if he fails to achieve this desired end becomes anxious, frustrated, and tense. The woman, seeing her man so distressed, often fakes an orgasm. Since she does not tell her partner that it was faked, for fear of hurting his pride, she does not obtain the needed sexual relief and, in her turn, becomes frustrated and anxious.

In the late part of sexual arousal (the plateau phase) a man’s testes are drawn up close to his body, and they increase in size. Masters and Johnson believe that the more the testes are drawn up, the more explosive is ejaculation and the greater the intensity of orgasm. They have also observed that the shorter the time the man stays in the plateau phase, the less is the movement upwards and the increase in the size of the testes. This argues that a man should ‘give to receive’; if he pleasures his partner in this phase, so that it lasts longer, he will receive more pleasure when he reaches orgasm.
