THE HUMAN SEXUAL RESPONSE – BEHAVIOURAL DRIVES

Although human sexuality and pleasure are so intimately related, it is interesting that, almost alone of the behavioural drives, the sexual drive can be suppressed, modified, or diverted; and a. person, if sufficiently motivated, can live for years without needing any sexual release. Equally, if a person who is sexually stimulated is unable to obtain sexual release, it can cause great frustration, unhappiness, and hostility, so the ‘pain principle’ is not entirely divorced from sexuality.

The reason for these variations is that the sex and pleasure centres receive messages from the genital area and also from the other parts of the brain. In the sex centre, the messages are interpreted and conveyed, as the sex drive, back to the other parts of the brain and to the genitals. In this way all kinds of memories, emotions, experiences, and thoughts can affect the sexual response. Anxiety, depression, or fear can dampen it, fantasy and love can enhance it. This is the basis for full sexual enjoyment and also for the sexual problems which may also arise.
