STIMULATING ERECTION
This enables some men who have had a spinal cord injury and are paraplegic to get erections, from psychological stimuli, although their spinal parasympathetic nerves are cut off from the erotic messages sent by the brain.
The second way in which a man can get an erection is well known to almost every man. This is by directly stimulating the penis with his own hand, by having it stimulated by his partner’s hand or mouth, or by the touch of his partner’s body. When a man’s penis is stimulated in one of these ways, messages pass along the pelvic nerves to the spinal cord. There they are relayed and the message is transferred to the erection nerves, which send messages back to the blood-vessels supplying the penis. These messages pass directly back to the penis without going to the sex centre in the brain. The mechanism is called a reflex, and the brain is not involved.
Most paraplegic men can get an erection in this way. If the man’s penis is stimulated, an erection will occur, although he can feel nothing, and has no nerve connection between his brain and the lower part of his body. The erection occurs because of the erection reflex which does not involve his brain.
