MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM

Definition

Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a pox virus. It is a relatively common skin condition in children and is not very contagious. Transmission is through close bodily contact Autoinoculation is common. Lesions may be widespread and numerous in immunodeficient patients and can present a difficult management problem in AIDS.

Clinical manifestations

Incubation period is 2 to 12 weeks. Lesions are typically waxy, pale, umbilicated papules from 1 to 10 mm in diameter. Cheesy material can be expressed from mature papules. Patients are asymptomatic unless secondarily infected.

Lesions spread by sexual contact generally occur on the lower abdomen, pubic area and thighs rather than on the genitals. Lesions are usually limited to the skin.

Diagnosis

Clinical features are usually diagnostic. Papular material may be examined microscopically or excised lesions examined histologically for molluscum bodies.

Treatment

Lesions can be treated by squeezing out the contents and applying liquid (80%) phenol or 40% tincture of iodine to the lesion with a pointed wooden probe or by curettage or light cautery following local anaesthesia, painting with silver nitrate or cryotherapy (carbon dioxide slush or liquid nitrogen).
