HOW TO WEAN: WAIT AS LONG AS YOU CAN

This advice is designed to be helpful to you if you are just starting to add solids to a baby’s milk diet, or if you have already started a young baby on solids and are finding that the baby is reacting to the new foods. For early weaning of a severely ill baby intolerant of all kinds of milk, you need a doctor’s advice.

Wait As Long As You Can

Ideally you should aim to give no foods, drink or juices other than milk or water to a baby with a history (or a family history) of food sensitivity before the baby is six months old. Even very big, sturdy babies can be totally satisfied by a milk diet until they are that age, or even later. Delay weaning as long as you can. If you have problems keeping up breastmilk supply, ask local NCT counsellors for help.

Doctors, dietitians and health visitors sometimes give conflicting advice about the need for vitamin and iron supplements for babies. Not all doctors are convinced that supplements are necessary for a baby on a milk diet. Some doctors advise against giving anything by mouth to potentially sensitive babies, unless absolutely vital. Consult your own doctor. Some babies do demand to be weaned earlier than six months, showing their need by unsatisfied hunger and more frequent feeding. If your baby clearly really needs food other than milk, and you cannot meet its needs with milk, then do start weaning earlier, but try to delay it as long as you can and do not start before four months if you can manage it.
